Helmuth Plessner - Philosophy, Anthropology, Sociology

Helmuth Plessner (1892-1985) taught both philosophy and sociology, published in both professions and represented both associations of philosophy and sociology. In that respect he belonged to a type of thinker who – similar to Max Scheler and Max Horkheimer, Theodor W. Adorno and Arnold Gehlen, René König and Helmut Schelsky – developed a strong presence in twentieth century German intellectual history. In addition, Plessner was a zoologist, a fact that lends authority to his conceptual interventions in natural science and the life sciences on the one hand, and the humanities and social sciences on the other. This research project on Plessner focuses on the complete works: the central idea is to emphasize all of his main works equally. “Einheit der Sinne” (1923, Unity of the Senses), “Grenzen der Gemeinschaft” (1924, The Limits of Community), “Die Stufen des Organischen und der Mensch” (1928, The Levels of the Organic and Man), “Macht und menschliche Natur” (Power and Human Nature, 1931), “Schicksal deutschen Geistes im Ausgang seiner bürgerlichen Epoche” (1935, The Fate of the German Mind at the End of its Bourgeois Epoch), “Verspätete Nation” (Belated Nation, 1959), “Lachen und Weinen” (Laughing and Crying, 1941) and "Conditio humana" (1961) are all key writings insofar as they introduce the core of Plessner’s theory.

1999 Co-founder of the Helmuth Plessner Association, a scientific association for philosophical Anthropology, together with Monika Plessner, Wolfgang Eßbach, Lolle Nauta, Konrad Thomas, Zdzislaw Krasnodebski, Bruno Accarino, Hans Peter Krüger, Walter Sprondel, Hans Ulrich Lessing, Kai Hauke.

General secretary (1999-2005); establishing an organizational structure to make the work and thinking of the German sociologist, anthropologist and philosopher Helmuth Plessner accessible to interdisciplinary research and an international public. An important step was the reprint of the key works by the Suhrkamp-Verlag in 2003. The highly complex interconnections among bio-, social, and cultural sciences, which Plessner accomplished for his time, will be kept present and contemporaneous through editions, translations and symposia, thereby promoting the systematic continuation of philosophical anthropology.

The foundation and development of the Helmuth Plessner Association (currently approx. 120 members) was followed by the construction of a website, which contains continuously updated research information (chronological listing of works, bibliography of secondary literature [from 1990]).

Co-Editor of an anthology at Suhrkamp in 2002 (Plessners ‘Grenzen der Gemeinschaft’. Eine Debatte).
